Peace Dollars
The Peace Dollar was first suggested by Farren Zerbe, a verteran numismatist and official historian of the American Numismatic Association. This coin was to commemorate the signing of the peace treaty between the United States and Germany at the end of World War I. The Peace dollar was delayed it's coinage due to some debate in Congress and the session ended before the new silver dollar issue had been dealt with. The Peace dollar was then coined under the Pittman Act, without Congressional sanction. The Pittman act was proposed to sell Great Britain silver bullion so that they could cover the silver certificates in India, with the expectation that the same number of coins melted would be produced at a later date. Therefore, the Peace silver dollar was used to fill the amount of Morgan Dollars that were melted in 1918. The Peace dollar was designed by Anthony De Francisci, an Italian who served as an apprentice under James Earl Fraser, designer of the Indian Head Nickel. Francisci used his wife as a model to come up with the design for Liberty. The features throughout the coin are soft, unlike the clear sharp details of the Morgan Dollar. There was some complications with the early high relief design so it was changed to accommodate this problem. This coin was struck from 1921 until 1935 and was the last silver dollar struck for circulation.
