Morgan Dollars

The Morgan dollar was designed by and Englishman named George T. Morgan. At the time the main engraver, William Barber, and his son, assistant engraver Charles Barber, could quite possibly have designed the new Silver dollar. The Director of the Mint, Dr. Henry Richard Linderman, wanted new engraving talent at the Philadelphia mint. So through a series of letters to the Deputy Master of the London Royal Mint, C. W. Fremantle, George T. Morgan was selected to travel to the United States and work as a new engraver. George Morgan used the profile of Miss Anna Willess Williams as his guide to the design of Miss LIberty on the obverse of the coin. The reverse design was taken from studies of the Eagle in nature and mixed with Morgan's own wreath and bow design. His initial 'M' is found on the obverse on the trunk of Liberty's neck and on the reverse in the bow of the wreath. The Morgan Dollars were initially called Bland dollars because of the congressman who sponsored the bill for a new silver dollar. To this day, the Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most collected and sought after American coin.
