Gold American Eagles
The American Gold Eagle design and program was originally started in 1986 in an effort to be competitive in the new desirable worldwide bullion coin market. The obverse of this coin has a design taken from the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, which was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design, or more notably the original coin, is considered by many to be the most beautiful design of any American coin, which played a large part in why this obverse design was chosen. The reverse depicts a 'family of eagles' motif which was designed by Miley Busiek. The American Gold Eagles can be bought in increments, including 1/10 ounce ($5), 1/4 ounce ($10), 1/2 ounce ($25), and 1 ounce ($50). They are made from 91.67% gold, with the remainder of the composition finished with copper.
