Gold Coins

Gold has long been regarded as THE precious metal. From as early as 2,700 BC there are records and surviving pieces of coins that were struck from gold or gold alloy planchets. Gold is valued not only for it's beauty or rarity, but for it's high ratio of value to weight. This ratio makes this coin one of the key precious metals to use for striking coins, reducing the overall weight that one has to carry around against value. Gold has been used in coinage and continues to be struck as legal tender, although, gold coinage was taken out of circulation in the 20th century. This section is dedicated to world gold coins that are not modern 'bullion' coins, but rather to collectible, numismatic coins that have long been out of circulation and use.
