Estate Jewelry

“Estate Jewelry” is simply jewelry that comes from someone's estate, usually after their death. As such, it may or may not be antique or collectible jewelry, and may or may not be worth a lot. Some of it will be worth more as antique jewelry than it would be as scrap metal, so if you have pieces of older jewelry you think may have some value you should do some research before selling it merely for its precious metal content.

Estate jewelry often has a higher degree of craftsmanship than comparable modern jewelry. This is one of the reasons antique or vintage jewelry has intrinsic. Also, the detailing and style of, say, an Art Deco ring are not something you see a lot in today's jewelry, so it is of interest in itself to connoisseurs of fine jewelry.

One excellent place to look for information on your vintage jewelry is the internet. Check inside the band to see if there are any jeweler's marks, and look them up. You may find, for instance, that what you thought was a silver ring is really white-gold. You can also take your item to someone who is knowledgeable about vintage jewelry and get their opinion. The expert may or may not charge you for this service; often it is assumed that you will sell the item to the expert, so ask ahead what his or her terms are.
